  Shravan Belgola

The town is 50 km from Hassan and 10 km from Chananrayanpatna. It has two hillocks, Indragiri and Chandragiri. The former one is also known as Vindhyagiri, and stands 143 meters high. About 600 hundred steps lead to the top of this picturesque hillock where 58.6 ft(17.38Metres) high Bahubali (Gomata) statue stands. It is a monolith carved around 980 A.D. and considered to be a landmark in the annals of world art. His broad shoulders are 26 feet across. He is a symbol of eternal value, absolute renunciation detachment, and a soul set free from material surroundings. There are seven temples on this hill. The Gomateswara's head anointing  (Mahamastakabhisheka) ceremony is a visual splendor, which is performed once in12 years. The last one took place in l993.

This tirth was set up under inspiration of the mother of Chamundaraya, the advisor of King Gangaras. The statue is clearly visible from a distance of 15 km. On the Chandragiri, there are fourteen temples. Of them, the temple of Adishvar is the oldest, On the Chandragiri hill; there is an idol of Bharat Chakravarti. KARKALA

Karkala has another towering statue of Gomateshwara (43 feet). Veerapandyadeva, the king of Bairarasa family of Karkala in 1432 AD on a rocky hill, consecrated this statue. There are life size statues of three Teerthankaras as well as one of Padmavathi Yakshi. The rulers also built Chathurmukh basadi at Karkala and famous Neminath basadi complex and the tall Manasthamba at Hariyangadi. Yearly celebrations are in February & once in 12 years Mahamastak abhisheka is performed.  The next Mahamastak abhisheka will be performed on 15th of February 2002.

MOODABIDRI

Savirakambada Basadi (Thousand Pillar Temple) built in 1462 AD-Basadi of 1000 pillars, famous for its stone sculpture. Mahadwar, Bhairadevi, Chitradevi, Namaskaara, Teerthankara and Garbhagruha are the 8 Mantapas here. The idol (8’high) of Chandranatha is established in the garbha gruha. Supaarshwa and Chandraprabha  Theerthankara idols are worth visiting. Navanaari kuinjara , a sculptural art piece that appears like an Elephant but nine dancers, are seen in the figure, is the famous art in this Basadi.

VENUR: A 35’ Gomateshwara can be seen here.  Like Karkal, in Venur also the Mahamastakabhisheka will be held once in 12 years.  The last Mastakabhisheka was held in February 1999.  So the next Mahamastakabhisheka will be held in the year 2011.

DHARMASTALA

Dharmastala is also a major pilgrim center for Hindus and Jains. The 39 feet Bahubali statue (175 tons) carved out of single rock by celebrated sculptor Ranjan Gopal Shenoy. The statue is consummate work of art and each of its lines and carves convey eternal values of a great religion and tradition. Dharmasthala represents religious tolerance. The Jain Teerthankara is worshipped on the same consecrate grounds as the native Devas as Lord Manjunath (Shiva). The priests are Vaishnavite and the guardian of the temple is Heggade but Jain by faith.
