Jai Mahavir ji |
The most famous and old temple in Delhi | |
|
|
In Delhi and its neighbor hood there are over 165 Jain temples. Delhi being the capital of India has its history which dates back to the time of Mahabharat or even before that. It has a very huge population of Jains that is spread all over the city. We can find many Jain temples here. The details of these temples are given below:- Digambara Jain Lal Mandir ji Delhi, the capitol of India has number of Jain temples. After the independence the Delhi has expanded and number of new colonies have come up. Now there are over 165 temples within Delhi and its surrounding area. But There is one famous and oldest ancient Digambara Jain temple and is known as Lal Mandir. It is just opposite of the Red Fort on the Netaji Subhas Marg, Chandni Chowk, Delhi. The temple was constructed in 1658 AD. It adds grace and sanctity to Delhi City. The temple has undergone many modifications and additions and alterations during the past but still retains some of the original elements. The prayer chamber ceilings have been repainted. Fluted Shahjahani columns in white marble can also be seen.
Though not as ornate as the fine temples in Gujarat and Rajasthan, it does boast detailed carvings, and gilded paintwork in the antechambers surrounding the main shrine to Parshvanath, the twenty-third Ttirthankara, and the main idol that is placed on the Central alters. There are number of idol of Tirthankars.
.
The other attraction at lal mandir ji is the bird’s hospital. The Jain Bird Hospital (free but donations are appreciated), in the temple courtyard, puts into practice the Jain principle that all life is sacred, admitting up to sixty sick birds per day. It serves as a rescue sanctuary for partridges, caught and wounded by fowlers and bought in bulk by Jain merchants who bring them here to recover, and there are separate wards for pigeons, parrots, sparrows (notoriously vulnerable to deadly whirring ceiling fans) and domestic fowl. Squirrels, who will not hurt the birds, are also treated here, but birds of prey are seen on a strictly outpatient basis, as they are not vegetarian. Most of the cages are home to pigeons with a disease that brings on paralysis. As their condition improves they are moved to larger cages closer to the roof, and eventually released. In the ground floor level there is a big book store where one can get Jain literature and other items significant to Jain religion Services: - Air: - Delhi has a International and as well as domestic airport and can be approached from any where.
